65th ANNUAL SHOW
Saturday 30th July 2011
Grange, Co. Sligo
A brief History of the Show
On Saturday the 30th July the 65th annual North Sligo Agricultural Show will be held in Grange. The North Sligo Agricultural Show has a long tradition within the local community. The first North Sligo Agricultural Show actually took place on Wednesday, September 12, 1945. However, due to the ‘foot and mouth’ crisis a few years ago, the annual show had to be cancelled. During 1945 Grange village was very much isolated and had no running water or electricity. There were very few cars or tractors. Nevertheless the first show attracted 1,150 entries. There were up to 100 classes for fruit, vegetables, flowers, agricultural produce, woodwork, homecrafts, knitting, needlework, crochet, poultry and eggs, cattle, horses, sheep and donkeys. Since then the show has grown from strength to strength, which has been possible through local community support and participation of volunteers. Many agricultural shows have run into difficulties in recent years, with some disappearing altogether, but the North Sligo event is continuing to be run very successfully. Last year’s show attracted a great attendance and the committee are hoping that mild weather and the great Declan Nerney can bring an equally big crowd this year.
Chairman’s Message
It is an honour for me as Chairman of the Show Committee to present this the 65th Annual Show to be held in Grange on Saturday 30th July 2011. Each year the Committee try to cater for the public at large by introducing a variety of displays and entertainment on the day and this year will be no different. To make the programme more attractive we have included Adopt a Dog section and have invited Declan Nerney to entertain the public.
Despite these challenging times it would not be possible to hold an event of this nature without the generosity and loyalty of our sponsors. Their contributions are very much appreciated. I must also extend a huge word of thanks to our hard working committee members, stewards and helpers on the day and to individuals and organisations that put their facilities at our disposal. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our exhibitors and the public for their continued support over the years and hope you all have a memorable and safe day.
